The KŁĄCZE [Rhizome] Project (in collaboration with Monika Waraxa and Marta Szulc)
Portrait painting is one of the most intimate activities, where there is synergy between the person portrayed and the artist. There is an element of play in our action – painting each other, exchanging information, connecting and multiplying. Diptychs of friends will be created, but we ourselves will also receive two different faces, reflections in the prism of a different, alien sensitivity.

Until recently, we worked separately in our studios. Sometimes we passed each other in the corridors and passageways between the Institute’s buildings, suspecting that the other person might be someone who has a studio here, and who is also a creative person? One day, we decided to get to know each other and see what each of us is working on, and so the rhizome of our community emerged to the surface. Its core is Instytut Chemii Przemyslowej (Institute of Industrial Chemistry) in Warsaw’s Żoliborz district. It is a unique space for us, with its memory, and energy, which every day influences our relationships and what we do here.
The main intention of our project is to expand the field of art and include artisans, sound engineers and filmmakers. On the occasion of Fringe Warsaw Festival, we will weave our activities and our energy with the space of the Institute, its historical buildings and greenery. The works prepared for the exhibition will refer to the form and intelligence of the rhizome, in particular to the change of perspective and scale it brings about, and to that which is revealed-hidden, under-above, visible-invisible, but also to the pattern of its unpredictable and vital structure.
„Rhizome” is a map of interpersonal entanglements in generational, environmental and non-human dimensions, shaped by the space of the Institute’s buildings, the nature surrounding it and the memory of what once was here. The exhibition will present photography, ceramic objects, installations and paintings.
