Borderline: Goma / Gisenyi

Goma and Gisenyi lie on opposite sides of the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, forming an almost continuous urban area along Lake Kivu. The border is crossed daily by thousands of residents, but successive conflicts and crises have repeatedly turned it into a route of escape. In 1994, hundreds of thousands of people moved from Rwanda toward Goma; three decades later, during the M23 offensive, the direction of flight shifted back toward Rwanda.

Goma i Gisenyi leżą po dwóch stronach granicy między Demokratyczną Republiką Konga a Rwandą, tworząc niemal ciągłą przestrzeń miejską nad jeziorem Kivu. Granica jest codziennie przekraczana przez tysiące mieszkańców, ale kolejne konflikty i kryzysy wielokrotnie zmieniały ją w drogę ucieczki. W 1994 roku setki tysięcy osób przemieszczały się z Rwandy w stronę Gomy; trzy dekady później, podczas ofensywy M23, ruch ponownie odwrócił się w stronę Rwandy.
